HOW-TO: Make GoogleVoice a Land Line and get a FREE home phone
// February 21st, 2010 // How-to, Techy
Once in a while you come across something so profound it amuses you. Well today I finally put together my totally free unlimited calling to US land line, complete with an analog phone. With a comprehensive tutorial and some cheap hardware, one can put together a land line at home. To me it seemed that people were tiptoeing around the topic of totally free calling from all types of phones, but I don’t mind putting the power right in people’s hands. To that end, please see this document, link after the jump describing exactly how to achieve unlimited free calling on all different types of phones
Tutorial
The document covers landlines and using the voice side of cellphones. I’m about to move on to SIP calling, which will fork into cellphones and portable devices as well as home ATAs, which I used to setup my landline.
Theres a bunch of sites that are mentioned in the document that one needs to signup with (free), that one of them is Sipsorcery.com
Excerpt from their site…SIPSorcery.com is a site that specializes in managing and routing SIP-based Voice Over IP (VOIP) phone calls. New user accounts are created with minimal functionality, but their usefulness can be enhanced through the use of scripts written in Ruby. Google Voice is not SIP-compatible on its own, but by pairing up a Google Voice phone number with a PSTN-to-SIP gateway provider and a SIP Sorcery account, users are able to effectively convert Google Voice phone numbers into pure SIP-compatible VOIP phone lines.
Users of these scripts are experiencing today a sneak preview of some of the features Google is expected to announce once Gizmo5 is fully integrated into Google Voice. This includes free wifi calling worldwide from certain smartphones and creating free home phone lines using analog telephone adapters (ATAs) such as the Linksys PAP2T-NA.
Well, once you have done all that you need to buy a VoIP Adapter, I opted for the Linksys SPA2102-NA, which I conveniently found on Craigslist for a mere $30. Pair that with a cordless phone I made my Google Voice into a full blown landline that calls anywhere in the US for free. To make this even better, all I need to do when I travel is take the Adapter with me, and I can have a FREE US number anywhere in the world. Now that what I call saving some coin!
Here are some pics of the setup.
