Tourism has been hit by the Global reccession in Zambia. Zambia Chronicle reports…

BUSINESS in the country’s tourism sector has significantly dropped by about 30 per cent since the start of the global recession.

Tourism minister Catherine Namugala disclosed this in Kasama yesterday during a meeting with stakeholders drawn from the hospitality industry.

Namugala said according to the government’s projections, the tourism sector had lost earnings due to negative effects of the financial crisis, which had hit the world economies including that of Zambia.

It seems even in a tourist driven economy such as Zambia, it has definately been affected. I was talking to a tour operator in Livingston, Zambia and he was saying how around the summer time he was making more than $10,000/month. Now he is only making a third of that.  Some countries in Europe are even offering a one-to-one exchange rate on the Dollar and Euro. Maybe Zambia should offer that type of incentive to attract more visitors in these meek times.
